I strongly advise that you consider cutting the flat surface or header area in the logs that cap over your doors and windows, because if you don't... eventually you will be trying to cut them upside down and this requires some experience to pull off with out making mistakes. So when you get to the Cap logs, just measure and draw reference lines with a level while the log is up on the wall in place. Then take it off the wall and cut your top flat surfaces down on the same horses you are using to notch your corners with. Just draw a level line on the end of the logs while they are still up on the wall. Then when on the ground... turn the log while using the level at the end of the log. This will get your flat spot very level and save you a ton of headache! Now just cut out the bulk of the wood and brush the header area down to your lines with your saw, and finally the last details can be cleaned up with a small 4” sander/Grinder with a 36 grit flexible round sanding disc. Use your level to make sure your header surface is level, and check your lines on the end of the log to make sure they stay plumb or level throughout his process.
